Image acquisition using laser scanning confocal microscope (LSCM, colloquially just a confocal microscope) became a daily routine of biomedical research. However, the conscious use and exploitation of full potential of LSCM requires specific knowledge of several aspects of optical fluorescent imaging and laser scanning technology. This course will provide basic knowledge on fluorophores and fluorescent proteins, will illustrate the operation principles of fluorescent and laser scanning imaging, which revolutionized biomedical research and on fluorescent microscopy techniques such as confocal and multiphoton imaging.
